"Of course you are, Robert," Fred said in an attempt to humour him. He had been harbouring doubts about Robert's mental stability for some time. For instance he had found it hard to believe that he was really the famous outlaw that he claimed to be. Now he was certain that the man was insane.

"No, I really am," Robert said, able to tell from Fred's tone that he hadn't been believed.

Alexis had overheard the exchange. "Of course you are," she said. "In that case you won't mind if I borrow Fred's wooden sword [1927] and skewer you, will you?"

  1. "No, of course I don't mind." Fred wondered whether he should say that he minded.
  2. "I do mind. Just because I'd survive doesn't mean that it would be an enjoyable experience."
  3. "Alexis!" Astra said. "I know that Robert is annoying, but you can't do that."
  4. "I've just thought of something," Astra said, trying to divert Alexis. "We can't wear these shirts, but if we can manage to tie them together into a sail then we can don our original shirts again."
