Carola did her best to plead with Miranda, but she simply would not react. She just stared at the
cavern walls. No one could tell what was going on in her mind. Fred threw up his hands in
exasperation. "I'm tired of this!" he shouted. "This is why I hate dealing with magic. Give me a
problem that human beings can actually solve!"
"I know very well what you mean," said Astra. "Still, we're better off than we were, as some of us can escape. if we're brave and careful, we'll undoubtedly find some way out of this. You're probably the one who's most at risk, though. Belboze needs us princesses, so he won't kill us, but his plans do not require a knight." Suddenly, she smiled. "I have an idea," she shouted to the others. But while her lips moved as she tried to explain it, nothing came out--undoubtedly due to the geas. After some thought, however, Carola and Maria seemed to have some idea of what she was going to say. Carola whispered to Belinda, who walked over to Fred with Maria and grabbed him by the arms. Fred was about to protest, but then he realized what she was trying to do--the geas would keep him from trying to leave, but it might not keep other people from taking him out.
