The dragon had fallen asleep after carrying out the selective erasure of
Billy's memory. Performing magic at such a distance was very tiring, and
he needed to recharge his batteries. Unfortunately he had forgotten to
first tell Astra that she need not worry about the boy.
So at first light Astra knocked on the door of Fred's room. When there
was no answer, she tried the door, which opened. Crossing the dark room,
she pulled back the curtains to let in the light. "Rise and shine!" she
called, turning towards the bed.
-
"Good morning, Astra," Fred says, opening his eyes.
-
"Good morning, Astra," Fred says, opening his eyes. Then he does a double take. "What's happened to you?" "Huh?" Astra says.
-
Fred isn't an early morning sort of person. "Go 'way," he grumps, pulling the blankets over his head.
-
As she turns, she trips over Velus and falls, luckily onto the bed.
-
But Fred's bed is empty, and there is no sign of Velus either.
-
Unfortunately in the gloomy passage Astra has chosen the wrong door. It's a stranger's astonished face that looks up at her.
