"We had mistaken him for a scout. He was in fact a new recruit charged
with the killing of our spy, who had been listening in on a conversation
he wasn't privy to. Rather then get him to kill him in their camp, he was
to take him out into the woods under the watchful eye of one of the more
experienced guerillas. If he failed to do so, the other man would kill him
and the spy. "They encountered a grizzly, which the spy provoked, perhaps in some desperate attempt to get away. It failed, as he was the bear's first victim. The other man fled, leaving him to deal with the bear. As we saw, he managed to defend himself well, though getting badly mauled in the process." "That other man was your spy?" Astra asked Henri. "Didn't you know what he looked like?" "No," the captain answered instead. "Only Charles and I knew who the spy actually was." He looked at his 2IC. "My attention was focussed on Henri," he said to the captain's unspoken question. "I never really looked at the other body." Turning to Henri and Astra, he said, "we never buried his body, did we?" Astra and Henri looked at one another. Like Charles, they had temporarily forgotten about him.
