Fred returned to where he had tethered his own horse. He mounted it and
set off back the way that they had come, hoping that the other two horses
would not have bolted too far and that the undergrowth on either side
would be thick enough to keep them to the track. If he could not find them
quickly, then he, Astra and Wilkes would have no chance of reaching the
inn before nightfall. Two people might have ridden one horse, but there
was no way that three could do so. They would be left with two options,
neither of them very satisfactory.
One option would be for the three of them to make camp once it got dark and spend an uncomfortable and hungry night - and potentially a dangerous one, if the bear was any indication - within the forest. They would only have Wilkes' sword with which to defend themselves, should that become necessary. The tribe that had befriended Fred and Astra had provided them with clothes [44178] but, perhaps rather surprisingly, had not given them any weapons. The other option would be for Fred to ride ahead to the inn. But by the time he could return with help, Astra and Wilkes would have spent several hours in the forest. Also since Wilkes was the only one with any money, and that was probably in the saddle bag of his bolted horse, there was no guarantee that a request for assistance would be acted on.
