On returning to the scene, Fred noticed that Astra was standing over the
body of Wilkes, who appeared to have been knocked unconscious by the fall.
Tough as she was, she could no way stand up to such a creature. Fred
noticed something that Astra had apparently missed - Wilkes had a sword.
It was unlikely he'd been able to wield it, but it might come in handy. He
shouted to Astra just as the bear started to charge. She had a bit of
difficulty retrieving it, but managed to just as the bear was almost on
top of her. Just as it reared up in front of her, she jabbed the sword
into the
bear's neck as hard as she could. Blood pouring out, roaring in anger and
pain, the bear swiped at her. She just managed to dodge its razor sharp
claws, but it was a close thing. Seeing an opening, Fred managed to lunge at the sword and wrenched it out and to the left, effectively slicing open the bear's throat. It tried to continue attacking, eventually collapsing dead from the loss of blood. After a short period where they recovered their breath, they checked around to see if there were other bears or other dangerous animals about. Seeing there were none, they picked up the still unconscious Wilkes and carried him to the relative safety of the wayside. After a short debate, they agreed that Astra would stay behind to keep an eye on Wilkes. She was also to be left with the sword. Since the horses had their stores, Fred would try and locate them and lead them back if he could.
