A Better Place to Wait

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 51316

It looked like being a long four hours. Fred sat and brooded, whilst Astra sat a short distance away from him, not knowing what to say but hoping that her presence might be of some comfort to him.

They had no way of keeping accurate track of time, but Astra guessed that an hour had passed, when Fred raised his bowed head and looked at her. "I'm sorry, Astra," he said. "I'm afraid that I haven't been very good company. It's no use my brooding. I need something to take my mind off things. Have you any ideas?"

"For a start, let's move out of sight of the castle. There's nothing to keep us in this spot, and one can't help feeling depressed here. If we go a little way up the track that the page took, then there will be no danger of his missing us when he returns."

"Yes, I suppose that would be a good idea."

They walked about half a mile up the track, until the lie of the land hid the castle from their sight.

  1. They talked about this and that till Wilkes returned.
  2. They had no way of keeping accurate track of time, but the sun had been near its highest point when Wilkes left. When dusk began to fall and he had still not returned, it was clear that something had happened to delay him.
  3. They were by the edge of a forest, where Fred said that his family used to hunt game. After a while, they heard something large moving through the undergrowth.
