Fred felt immense relief upon hearing those words, but it was tinged with
sadness. Though his family had survived, all the serving staff must have
been killed when the castle had been destroyed. Some other families might
not have felt remorse at the loss of people who were ultimately
expendable. Then again, not many other families of nobility could claim to
have three generations offer them their loyal service. Fred was taken back to a time several months before he was given his quest by the king. He was talking to his personal manservant, Hendix. Such interactions with the staff was certainly accepted, even encouraged in the D'Honaire household. The staff weren't looked down upon or seen as lesser people, something that they appreciated greatly. Fred could tell Hendix anything he wanted; such as his daily hopes and fears. He was like a human journal. He was brought back to the present by a nervous cough from Wilkes. "Will that be all, sir?" The boy timidly ventured. Fred nodded. The boy, visibly relieved, gave the pair a clumsy salute and rode off. They watched him disappear over the horizon, when Fred went and sat in the remains of what had been his family's home for centuries. Astra, after a moments hesitation, joined him. She wished she could say something, but she had never suffered a serious loss of her own. She was not one for empty platitudes.
