Dilemma

A shiver ran down Carola's spine. So these were allies of Vaeren. It had taken all Carola had to kill Vaeren, and they'd still come within an inch of dying. If all these beings were as powerful as him, they wouldn't stand a chance.

Before Carola could say anything, however, the leader said, "We came here to kill him. But you had killed him first."

Her confidence rose, although it still frightened her to speak to these things. "All right, then. So why are you surrounding us?"

"You know who we are. Therefore, you must die."

"I think there's been a mistake," said Jarlath. "We have no idea who you are. We'd never even heard of you until you showed up out of nowhere and threatened to kill us. I think that's a bit counterproductive."

"You lie!" hissed the being. It was a sound like a sword being drawn. "You knew how to destroy the magic Vaeren stole from us, so you must know who we are."

"No, we don't," said Carola, drawing up her courage. "We... Jarlath, my friend, figured out how to do it on his own, by examining Vaeren's magic."

"If you knew how to destroy Vaeren's magic, then you are still a threat to us."

1. "So either way, you must die."
2. "But we will let you live, if you allow us to remove the knowledge from your minds."
