Telling the soldiers their true identities would inevitably involve
explaining how two of their party came to be in the form of warrior
rabbits. That in turn would mean giving the full story of their
adventures. But it was such a remarkable story that Carola doubted that it
would be believed, unless by any chance these soldiers did know
about the Pyramid. But that was highly unlikely. She decided that it would
be wiser not to give their true identities, at least until she knew more
about these strange men - if men they were.
Approaching the one who, from the silver insignia on the shoulder of his uniform, seemed to be their captain, she spoke to him in the Common Tongue. Almost everyone in these parts could speak it, as their second language if not their first. If the soldiers could not understand it, then they would have to be from a land that was far distant. "Hello," she said. "Why have you surrounded us? We mean you no harm, and even if we did there are only four of us."
