Carola did not trust these strange soldiers, even though they had claimed
to be enemies of Vaeren's. She could not tell if they served good or evil,
or even whether they were human, but the way they had threatened them was
not encouraging. What if they went beyond what they had said they would
do, either by accident or design, and totally wiped the memories of
herself and her friends, rather than just removed their knowledge of
Vaeren's magic? Also if they poked about in her mind they might find out
about the Pyramid, and she did not trust them with that knowledge.
But if she and Jarlath refused, how could they prevent these soldiers from killing the four of them? She was still weak, and Jarlath's magical knowledge was limited. (She was unaware that Jarlath was still highly charged with residual mana from Vaeren's construct, which might improve their chances. [49377]) Even against ordinary soldiers they would have been uncertain of winning if it came to a fight, and these were far from ordinary soldiers if they had the same magic at their disposal as had Vaeren. Where had they come from? How come she had never heard of them? Could they be the threat to Caemlyn that she had seen in her vision? She had hesitated too long. "You must answer now, or we will kill you all," the captain said.
