Fred and Astra begin to explore the city. They get many strange looks,
especially
Astra. Before they have gone very far, they are intercepted by a man
wearing a navy blue
uniform. He has a strange metal device protruding from a holster on a belt
round his waist.
"I'm afraid I'm going to have to arrest you, ma'am", he says. "You are in
breach of
the city's decency laws." "Ah, you must be one of the sheriff's men,"
Astra says.
"I assure you that I am not naked through choice."
"Sheriff's man?" says the man. "Not exactly, but I am a police
officer." He thinks
to himself that the woman has probably escaped from some mental
institution - a very
secure one judging by the remains of the chains attached to her wrists. She
could well be highly dangerous.
Fred decides to intervene in an attempt to prevent Astra's arrest. "It's all right," he tells the man. "As you may have guessed, the woman has escaped from an asylum, but I have recaptured her and am taking her back to be chained up again in her cage." The policeman had already feared that the man might be from the same institution as the woman. His use of the terms "asylum" and especially "cage" confirms the suspicion. "I'm arresting both of you," he says, drawing his gun. "Please don't give me any trouble." With his free hand he reaches for his radio. Fred and Astra don't know what the gun is, but it seems clear that it must be a weapon of some sort.
