Fred and Velus decided that a little break was in order, so they decided
to explore the fairgrounds a little. Still, a gnawing suspicion in the
back of Fred's mind wondered why there was a portal from the Dragon's cave
so close to the palace. Surely, that was dangerous?
Fred found a carnival game called "Test Your Strength." The idea was to take a large hammer and hit a wooden plank, which in turn sent a large peg flying upwards. The higher you got, the stronger you were. If you hit the bell at the top, you won a prize. Fred decided to give the game a try. He hit the plank with all of his strength, and the peg came within inches of the bell. "Nice try!" said the worker running the game. "You're almost as strong as Sir Paulito himself!" Fred readied himself for another attempt when he saw an unusual site: the King walking along with one of his advisors, enjoying himself as if he had no cares in the world. Fred kept out of sight and eavesdropped on the conversation. "...so I send Fred off to slay the Dragon. He of course has no idea that the Dragon is in my employ. Naturally, that idiot is no match for a full sized beast, and he'll die horribly. The Dragon gets a nice fee, and I get to 'comfort' Sir Fred's grieving widow. It's a win-win situation!" The King laughed. Fred then realized what was afoot: this whole quest to kill the Dragon was nothing more than a plot for the King to get Fred out of the way and woo his beautiful wife!
