Amy bitterly regretted her misjudgement. She might have been able
to take out one of the questers, but she knew that she had no hope of
overpowering all
four, especially unarmed. She wondered whether to call for Nigel, but he
was unlikely to be close enough to hear her, and she felt that Sigurd in
particular was ready to kill her given the slightest excuse.
"Can you lead us to the entrance to the caves?" Master Velus asked her. "Yes," Amy replied. "Can we trust her?" Lord Marcus asked Velus. "Probably not. But since we have failed to find the entrance ourselves, what have we to lose? Is the entrance nearby, Witch? Answer truthfully if you want to live." "Yes, it's not far," Amy said. Though she and Nigel had become lost earlier, she had managed to recover her bearings while she was approaching the questers' camp, and she was now fairly confident that she knew where she was in relation to the entrance. "Then we had better leave our horses tethered here and proceed on foot," Lord Marcus said. "Will they be safe from the serpent whilst we are gone?" Sigurd asked. "Maybe not," Lord Marcus said. "But there is nothing that we can do about it. We can't take them into the caves with us. If the worst comes to the worst, we will have to make our homeward journey on foot." If the worst comes to the worst, the dragon will kill the lot of you and me too, Amy thought, but she felt it wiser not to say this out loud.
