The valley was quite a pleasant place. They even found some clumps of
small trees that bore enough edible fruit to provide them with a
reasonable meal. Goat meat stew would have been even better, but they had
no way of catching or killing the wary and fleet-footed goats, and would
not have been able to cook their flesh if they had been lucky
enough to kill one. Their hope that the Spirits might intervene again was
not fulfilled.
The valley soon began to slope gently downhill, and late in the afternoon they left the mountain range behind them. They found themselves:
