Amy put her hands above her head to show that she was unarmed, and then
she steeled herself to walk forward into the flickering light cast by the
fire. "Er, hello," she said.
The young wizard simply smiled, as if he had been expecting this, but his three companions sprang to their feet in alarm and drew their swords. "It's the mad Amazon!" the buck-toothed knight said; the young woman simultaneously exclaimed: "It's the witch-woman!" "I mean you no harm," Amy said. "I come on foot and unarmed, to show my good intentions. I am Amy Gupta, the girl whom your king sent a year ago to slay the dragon. Well, I just wasn't equipped to do that. I don't mean in terms of weapons and armour, but rather that I lacked the necessary skills and strength of character. But I was lucky and survived. I've toughened up a lot over the last year, both physically and mentally, and now I offer you such aid in your quest as I can give you, if you'll accept it. All I ask in return is your companionship. Nigel's been very good to me, but I feel the need for some human company." Amy was pleased to see that, though the three who were armed still had their swords in their hands, at least they seemed to be prepared to listen to her. "Who is this Nigel?" the older man asked. "Your lover?" "Oh no, nothing like that! But he is my best friend, indeed my only friend. He's not a human but a velociraptor. You saw me riding him earlier. He's extraordinarily intelligent and very friendly. I'd like to introduce you to him, but it might be better if you were to leave your horses behind, as he would only spook them again if you brought them with you."
