As they continued to search deeper within the cave system, which seemed to
be quite extensive, Fred said: "I've had an idea about that anklet.
Perhaps the slave didn't take it off. Could the anklet instead have been
here for so long that even the bones of the slave who wore it weathered
away into nothing?"
"I wouldn't have thought so. I think that would take many hundreds of years. In that length of time the bronze of the anklet would surely have become noticeably corroded. Besides, it seems likely that the slave who wore the anklet would have been here during the same period as the goats, and their bones have survived." "Another idea, then. After the slave who wore the anklet died, somebody could have removed it for some reason." "I suppose that's possible, but..."
