Return of the Mummy?

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 47078

The mummy's eyes, still partially rotting but already full of hateful energy, were a sight that struck fear into the hearts of even the four men surrounding it. "And what if his power proves too great for us, Nakaru?" said the man who had spoken first. "What if we cannot control him once he returns from the land of the dead?"

"Do not be foolish, Chaular," said the largest of them. His voice was deep and powerful and almost as terrifying as the mummy's eyes. "He is clever and powerful, but he will live on our sufferance and he will know that. Besides, the spell will only keep him here until he has taken his revenge. He could stay here as long as he wants by delaying it, but he will not. Nothing will keep him from repaying those who took away his life."

"And what of the three who have appeared there?" said a female voice, smooth and deadly as spider silk. "What if they disrupt his magic? We should act against them soon, before it is too late."

"No," said Nakaru. "We do not yet understand them. If they are truly disrupting our magic, we must move carefully against them. We must keep to the shadows until the time is at hand."

"What if the time is at hand and we still keep to the shadows?" said the woman. "We must move subtly but also decisively. Sometimes I fear we have waited for too long." She stepped forward, as if to challenge Nakaru, but then edged back--his power was as great as his imposing presence. But clearly, she was not cowed.

Lord Fred kept trying to question the rider, but could not get anything out of him. The rider paid him no more heed than a chattering monkey. Fred remembered, after a moment, that the rider had no understanding of his language and shut his mouth, his face red with frustration and embarrassment. He realized just how vulnerable they now were and how little he could do about it. If he angered these men, he and Exotica could doubtless hold their own against them, but it would be hard to survive in this completely alien place.

The strange beasts carried them towards a small encampment of tents huddled around an oasis. The lead rider drove his beast forward and gave a ritual salute, then shouted a chanted greeting.

  1. A response came from within.
  2. No response came. The encampment seemed to be empty of people, even though some of the strange riding beasts were tied up nearby.
