When the shaman had finished, the monstrous figure stopped moving. Then it
quickly disintegrated into its constituent grains of sand. Whatever
magical force had been providing it with a semblance of life and holding
it together had obviously been dispelled.
Now that he could safely speak, Fred asked the rider behind whom he was sitting: "What was that thing?" But the rider merely shook his head. The wounded were tended to, and the dead were buried underneath the sand. There were not as many in either category as Fred, Exotica and Velus had feared. It seemed that the riding beasts had suffered much worse than their riders, presenting larger targets and being less adept at getting out of the way. This meant that, when the group moved on, Fred and Exotica were not the only ones who had to sit behind another rider. (Exotica was carrying Velus.) "It did not work," one of the four men standing round the sarcophagus said. [15154] "We asked him to do too much too soon," the large man at the sarcophagus's foot replied. "It does not matter, though, for no harm has been done to him. And his power will soon increase. Next time it will be very different, and whatever he conjures up will not be beaten off." His gaze was still fixed on the stone coffin:
