One of the riders stepped of his animal and, standing stiff and straight, raised his hands
into the air and turned his face up toward the sun. Exotica could see that the man was
dressed slightly differently from the other riders. Over his robes he wore necklaces with
beads and and feathers, and some with stones with strange glyphs on them. On his face he
wore a mask made of stone and painted with glyphs and figures that seemed to be crosses
between men and animals. As he raised his hands, he began to chant a rhythmic chant, and
the sand-thing fell back for a moment.
This man, Exotica thought, seemed not dissimilar from the primitive shamans she had heard of who were part of the tribes that lived to the south of Aqualaria, but the spell he was casting was much more complex. These shamans served both religious and magical functions. She wondered whether this was a magical rite or a religious one to dispel a demon. Perhaps it was both--the line between magic and religion was not always definite, even in her kingdom. It was only a century or so ago that the White Hand had been a monastic order, and even after reorganizing itself along the lines of a guild, many of its most prominent members were still monks. Fred looked like he was about to say something, but Exotica put a finger over her lips. The other riders were silent, and from her own secret and unauthorized studies into magic, she knew how dangerous it could be to speak while a spell this complex was being cast.
