A mixture of women, old men and children emerged from the tents, and
returned the greeting. Exotica reflected that all the younger men of the
encampment were probably contained in their own party. Since all of the
adults wore long, loose flowing robes, it was only their faces that
betrayed their age and gender.
The leader of the riders said something, no doubt telling of what had happened with the sandman, and in response several of the women began a keening song. Exotica guessed that these women might be the wives of those that had fallen victim to the sandman, and that their song was a lament for the dead. Fred and Exotica (carrying Velus) were shown by the leader into one of the tents, where they were provided with robes like those that the locals wore. For Fred's attire was unsuitable for the desert and Exotica had only the cloak that one of the riders had lent her.
