By midday, Fred and Astra - with the snake back round her leg - had left
the plains behind and were starting to climb into the foothills of the
mountains. The vegetation was now more varied than the endless grass of
the plains, with bushes and even some small trees, and they were able to
find berries and nuts to eat for lunch.
As they ate, Fred asked Astra: "Has the snake told you what we have been sent here to do yet?" "No, it hasn't. Snake, why are we here?"
