As the day wore on, the distant mountains at last began to look noticeably
closer. They would not reach them today, but should do so sometime
tomorrow.
Fred was very hungry by now, but he knew that going without food for a day or so would not do him any real harm. At least he had been able to quench his thirst back at the stream. Towards evening, another small stream crossed their path. They decided that this would be a suitable spot to spend the night, since it was always useful to have a source of fresh water close at hand for drinking and washing. The snake uncoiled itself from Astra's leg, and told her that it was going in search of its own dinner. She assumed that it would be looking for mice and the like. Though they had seen no more animals of any size, she imagined that small creatures must be be living on the plain, hidden by the grass.
