Fred's bravado regardless, hunger increasingly made itself known as time
passed. Astra had not suffered any ill-effect from the meat, seeming to
prove that the snake had been telling the truth. He wondered why the
Spirits had to send a guide to speak for them and why was it a
snake. It would be cold comfort to him that Astra was thinking among similar lines, though she didn't question the snake's honesty. She was more wondering why they couldn't have sent something like a bird. The weight of the snake was seriously hampering her pace. Not surprisingly, Fred's thoughts were brought back to food. He had come to the realisation that if he waited for the Spirits to provide food and a means of cooking it, then he'd be waiting an indeterminable amount of time.
