The Portal

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 46775

Even after all the time that he had spent in the caves, there were still new wonders to be discovered, Mist reflected. The portal, for such it clearly was, could not have been here long, though, or otherwise he would have detected it before this.

The portal was hexagonal in shape, with its lowest side parallel to - but about six inches above - the floor of the passage. The sides were each about two feet in length, and seemed to be made of a glowing green light. Through the hexagon could be seen, not what should be behind it, but rather a view of a castle that seemed to be perhaps a hundred yards away. The castle was surrounded by a moat. Outside the moat was an area free of any trees or undergrowth, no doubt to allow the castle's occupants clear sight of any attackers. Further away, there was woodland. It was a bright sunny day, seeming even brighter in contrast to the gloomy passageway.

The portal was almost up against the tunnel wall, so Mist could not see what it looked like from the other side. Naturally he went to fetch the others, to see what they would make of it. Even the wonders of the library paled in comparison to what he told them, so they followed him readily enough.

When they reached the place:

  1. The portal had gone.
  2. The scene that the portal showed had changed.
  3. None of them recognised the castle.
  4. One of them recognised the castle.
  5. An assault on the castle seemed to be in progress.
  6. Velus, whom Fred and Astra hadn't seen since episode 44, was there.
