Against the Animates

There was nowhere they could hide, and even if there was, the animates would surely find
them out eventually. So they had no choice, it seemed, but to face the animates somehow.
She had to think. She had to think about what Jarlath had said. These things were
controlled by Vaeren's mind, just like the bars were, so she could destroy these things using
the Pyramid. But she wasn't sure she could do that and stay on her feet, and there'd be
more after these. She had to think. She... She had an idea. Maybe she was going about
this the wrong way, attacking the symptoms when she should be attacking the root causes...
She closed her eyes and tried to feel the power of the pyramid within her. She knew the things were speeding toward her, ready to take her life, but she tried not to feel fear. She didn't focus the light of the pyramid into any part of her, but rather tried to see with it. She saw Vaeren's mind. It was cold and hateful and alien and it frightened her even more than the animates that were rushing down on her like winds of death... No, she couldn't let herself lose concentration. She couldn't push against the full weight of that mind, not without destroying the conduits anyway, and didn't want to get it's attention, but maybe... Somehow, she saw how their presence was pushing against his subconsious, so that he percieved them, and then... she made them stop. At that moment, the screaming stopped. Much to the surprise of Jarlath, Matthias, and Belinda, the animates began to simply walk away. "Wow," said Jarlath. "What did you just do?" "I--I don't know," said Carola, her eyes still firmly shut, "and I don't want to think about it too hard or I might stop doing it. Look, I think I know where the conduit is. Follow me." She began to walk off through the hallway, with eerie grace, her eyes still closed. The other three looked at each other, shrugged, and followed her.
