"How did you know which way to go?" Jarlath asked, as he and the other two
ran after Carola.
"Away from those guards seemed like the best choice," Carola replied. Jarlath had hoped that she might have had some cunning plan in mind, but from her answer it seemed that she did not. Unfortunately, whilst our heroes were finding it difficult to see, the animated statues did not seem to have any trouble detecting and following them; perhaps they were able to use some sense other than sight, Jarlath reflected. Carola led the four along the dungeon passage at a brisk pace, but when she took a glance over her shoulder she could see that the animates were still following them, not appearing to hurry but implacable and untiring. She feared that sooner or later they would reach a dead end and find themselves cornered, for though the dungeons were large they must come to an end eventually and there was no reason to think that there would be a second exit. There seemed to be no side passages, merely doors to more cells at intervals on either side. Should they turn and fight? It would be four against four, they still had their swords, and perhaps she could call on aid from the Pyramid again. But how did one harm a living statue? Swords would surely be no more use against their opponents than fists would be. She wished that the confounded alarm would stop. It seemed just as audible here, in spite of the distance they had come, and it was distracting when one was trying to think.
