"I don't know. I don't feel tired or dizzy at all, although I'm still a little sick to my stomach. What's that screaming?"

"As I told Belinda and Matthias, that's Vaeren's alarm, or maybe just his subconscious trying to catch the attention of his consciousness," Jarlath said. He was very relieved to have someone else who was fully mentally aware to help him out. "It's good to see you're still alive."

"Thanks." Carola smiled weakly. "I still feel a little overwhelmed, even if I do have all my strength back.

"I don't blame you. I felt the energies of the pyramid when I was helping you out and-- uh-oh." The four heroes could hear the clank of steps on the black stone floors of the dungeon. Everything down here and in most of the castle was made of the same black stone and therefore it could be hard to see in it, in spite of the enchanted iron lamps that gave off a cold, inhuman light. But they could make out a squadron of four of Vaeren's animates coming toward them. Luckily, they were still armed--Vaeren had apparently been so confident that they couldn't escape that he hadn't even taken away their weapons--but Carola reflected that they were probably better off saving their energy until they reached the conduit, which would be heavily guarded. "Follow me!" she said.

1. The heroes run in the opposite direction, hoping to escape their notice.
2. Matthias and Belinda, who aren't thinking straight, charge the animates.
