We don't know where this conduit thing is or even how to recognise it. And even supposing we find it, how do we destroy it? Even if your theory about salt is correct, I'm sure that Vaeren isn't stupid enough to keep a large supply of it around the place. In any case, we can't do anything until Carola comes round. I'm worried about her."

"The Pyramid wouldn't have been placed in her if they didn't think that she could handle it," Jarlath replied, trying to be reassuring. "I'm sure that she'll regain consciousness very soon. As I said, the conduit is bound to be heavily guarded, so that should help us to find it. And I'm sure that my magical ability will enable me to identify it once I see it. But we can't afford to wait for Carola to come round. Now that the alarm has sounded, the guards will be down here at any moment, or even Vaeren himself."

"But she's much too heavy for us to carry," Belinda objected

"Then we'll have to leave her here for now."

  1. "Never!" Belinda said stubbornly.
  2. "All right," Belinda said reluctantly.
  3. Too late. At that moment the first guards came into view, as they got to the bottom of the stone steps that led down to the dungeons.
  4. Fortunately at that moment Carola came round.
