As they went to the library, Astra took stock. So she was a dog - or to be
precise,
a bitch. Perhaps it had appealed to the dragon's sense of humour (if it
had been he
who had placed the scroll for her to find) that she, a princess
who could trace her lineage back through many generations, should be a
croosbreed. At
least she had a weapon now: a powerful jaw with a fine set of teeth. Her
body was
going to need a lot of red meat to sustain it, so it was fortunate that
they had now
got some spells for inceasing their food supply. She could now only see in
black and
white, but that was compensated by much improved senses of hearing and
smell. Fred
smelt sweaty, but pleasantly so, Velus had a sharp odour, and she herself
a rather musky one.
She could communicate with Fred using the code that he and Velus had developed, but it was inevitably very slow and laborious for all but the simplest of messages. Still, it weas a bonus that she could talk to Velus. Perhaps the dragon wanted it that his creations would be able to communicate. She felt she had better give Velus a warning: "You needn't think that, now I'm a dog too, you can come sniffing round me. I'll bite you if need be." Sounding hurt, Velus said: "Of course not. Actually, I still have enough of my human instincts that I prefered the old you." Their search of the library:
