My God, thought Fred, what was that thing? It resembled
nothing he had ever heard about before in his life, and even the people of
the Great Empire hadn’t had ships that could fly. Then again, it was no
stranger than beings who could rewrite reality, or demons who could stop
time, or a beautiful red-haired woman who claimed to have known him for
three years who he’d never met in his entire life.
After far too long, Astra gained the courage to speak. Velus had already slipped around to the back of the mysterious structure and urinated there, unnoticed by the others, and had now returned and was pacing impatiently. “Are you alright, Fred?” she asked. ”I suppose so,” said Fred. “It’s just… This is getting far too strange. I need some rest before we do... whatever it is we’re supposed to do. I barely even understand this quest!” ”I know, Fred. But at least this isn’t as bad as the battle with the Xorns. Remember that?” ”No I don’t!” shouted Fred, suddenly full of rage. “I don’t remember you at all. Obviously someone has twisted your memories through magic.” ”And you’re not even going to consider the possibility that your memories have been altered?” said Astra, now angry herself. “My memories feel just as real to me as yours do to you.” ”No! I’m not going to be deceived by any of this madness anymore. Obviously this must be some kind of illusion. I am Lord Frederigo D’Honaire and I have a dragon to kill!” Astra looked almost on the verge of crying. Fred wished there was something he could do to comfort her, but... No. He would not allow any more distractions from his quest. He thought he saw a mountain looming in the distance. Perhaps he was near the Shreken. He tramped off into the grassy fields. Didn’t he need to relieve himself? No, that could wait, first he had to get away from all this madness…
