Not very long after Fred and Astra first noticed that the jungle was
thinning, they came to its end and saw a grassy plain stretching away
ahead of them. Beyond it, they could see a distant mountain range. Where
they were, the jungle edge ran roughly north-south, terminating at the
lake which they had been continuing to flank on its southern side.
By this time, judging by the sun it was roughly midday. They were feeling hungry, so they made a meal from the last of the supplies that Anbana's people had given them. Afterwards, Astra dozed off in the warm sunshine.
