Whether for better or worse, they decided not to go through the portal.
They were sure Alfred had Velus had had plenty of time to get along
without the two of them, so they didn't feel too bad about it. Fred nudged
Astra just then, and and he indicated that the portal had changed. So they
lost the chance to change their mind. They continued on, leaving the
portal far behind. Astra had a niggling feeling the portal was what the
Spirits had been directing them to. It hadn't been. The volcano Fred had christened Toothsome had begun to show some sign of activity not long after Fred and Astra had stepped through the portal. Coincidence? Maybe. A few days ago, it had begun erupting, for the second time in its thousands of years of existance. The area they saw had appeared to be peaceful, but then, portals would not known for conveying both sound and vision. They had been spared the ominous sounds of a large river of molten lava destroying everything in its path. If they had gone through the portal... Of course, the pair were happily oblivious to all this.
