Fred continued: "I remember that the ring came off your finger just before
the river bent to the left. It was only just before we spotted the
washerwoman from the village. So it should be fairly easy to find the
place again."
"I thuppothe it ought to be. But given my luck, the ring will probably have rolled into a patch of thuch thick undergrowth that we will never find it." "Come on, Astra. It's not like you to be so negative." "It'th not like me to be bald and lithping either. But I'll try to be optomithtic." As Fred and Astra finished their meal, Anbana came back, the interpreter with him. "I have checked on where the grave of the explorer is to be found," he said. "It is close by the group of statues that includes the one beneath which our leader was buried. As he was an outsider, the explorer was not given a statue, but his grave was marked by a cairn of stones. You should be able to find it without too much difficulty. Since the land is dead, nothing will have disturbed the stones." Fred and Astra exchanged uneasy glances. They remembered that many of the statues had been knocked over by Fiona, [35816] and hoped that the cairn had not suffered the same fate. Anbana went on: "But it's getting late, so you will not want to start until the morning. I have arranged a hut for you to spend the night. I will lead you to it."
