Looking for a Needle in a Haystack

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 42100

It was only when Astra reached the city - a sizeable and bustling place - that she fully realised how difficult finding Mercury was likely to be. At the scale of the map, the blob that represented the city and the symbols for Mercury and herself were almost on top of one another. She thought that Mercury seemed to be somewhere close to the city's centre, but it was not possible to be any more precise than that. Not being able to read the street signs did not help, either.

It occurred to her that the mage would have had the same problem with the scale of the map. But he might have had some magical means of finding Mercury once the map had brought him fairly close. She did not have that advantage.

It seemed reasonable to assume that, like herself, Mercury would be a visitor to the city rather than a local. In that case he (or she) would probably be staying in an inn. Accosting a passer-by, Astra asked him: "Excuse me, but are there any good inns around here."

The reply was:

  1. "The biggest and the best is the Black Gryphon."
  2. "Oh yes, dozens." Even if that was something of an exaggeration, it didn't bode well.
