What Does It Mean?

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 41617

Astra was not sure what to do. Had the horse been guiding her to the bridle or to the keys? If he would not consent to being ridden without the bridle, then why should he consent to being ridden with it? What were the keys for? It seemed unlikely that they would be protecting anything too valuable, since otherwise why leave them hanging up in a shed whose own door was left unlocked? Why should the horse want her to find them? She checked the nail again, but there was no third item there.

Astra left the shed, carrying both the bridle and the bunch of keys. There was just enough light for her to see that the horse had now reached the far corner of the field and had stopped.

Astra made her way across the field towards him. As she got closer, she could see that he was looking in her direction, as if he was waiting for her. She saw that he was standing next to what looked like a stable. When she got close enough, she saw that it was padlocked. She guessed that one of the keys that she held would unlock that padlock.

The stable door did not go all the way up, so that over it she could see that there were several more horses inside. Was "her" horse telling her that, though he would not let himself be ridden, she was welcome to ride one of the others?

  1. Astra's analysis of the situation turned out to be correct. (Though the other horses were less valuable than Mercury, they were less able to look after themselves; hence their being kept in a locked stable overnight.)
  2. Astra's analysis was wrong.

JH (I haven't used the name "Mercury" in the body, since it is all written from Astra's POV and she isn't aware of the name)
