After escaping the enchanted area of the forest, the three adventurers
had settled into a routine for traveling. When they camped for the night,
Velus took first watch. He then woke Astra up, who took second watch. He
had learned quickly that Astra was a light sleeper; he had tried to wake
her up one night with a soft kiss on the cheek and woke up the next
morning with a red palm-shaped mark on his face. Astra always took the
shortest shift. Much of this was due to the fact that Fred tended to talk
in his sleep, and it was quite obvious what he was dreaming about. As a
result, Fred usually ended up taking the longest watch.
When morning came, Fred roused the others. He had learned from Velus’ experience, and consequently always woke Velus first, letting Velus wake Astra up while Fred searched for food. It usually ended up that whatever nuts, berries, and edible plants Fred found made up the whole day’s food, and they felt exceptionally lucky when they managed to catch one of the small local wild animals. Fred wasn’t much of a nature expert, so the three often spent days eating things they never thought they would have eaten before, coming either from a farm or from nobility. One particularly bad day Fred found a plant that didn’t sit well with anyone; needless to say, they didn’t get very far. Each day they pressed on, covering as much ground as they possibly could. It was vital to get to the White House as quickly as possible, for who knew what the Witch was planning? Forest soon turned into grassland, with many streams of pure and healthy water. Velus soon proved adept at catching fish, and generally, even though they had spent about three weeks since they had finally gotten rid of those blasted knights and the enchanted part of the forest, spirits were high. Grassland soon turned into desert, and they needed to revise their routine so that they could travel by night when it was much cooler. Food was scarce here. Velus was looking rather emaciated, and both Fred and Astra had lost a lot of muscle mass. Fatigue began to play a factor in their ability to move, and soon the general mood of the camp turned to despair. Day after day they slept, wondering if that sleep would become eternal. Each night, they dragged themselves up and covered what little ground they could before they were too exhausted to move anymore. This continued until one night, Fred thought he could make out under the light of a full moon a caravan crossing the desert near enough that there might be hope of meeting up the tail end of it.
