Resuming Their Mission

Prior to their entering the forest, Astra had managed to get herself some clothes to supplement the underwear that had been all she had been wearing on leaving the caves, [760] but after so long a time her attire was no better than filthy rags. Velus was no better off, whilst Lord Fred's armour was very rusty. At least their swords, [218] protected by their scabbards, were still in good condition.

"We've got to re-equip ourselves before we face the Witch," Astra said. "Dressed like this, she'd just laugh at us." (Her sentence was grammatically incorrect, but that is her fault and not the author's.)

"After so long a time, she may no longer hold your love," Fred pointed out. "He may have escaped, she may have let him go, or - and I hate to say this - he could even be dead."

"No, she still has him," Astra responded. "I feel it in my bones."

1. The three managed to re-equip themselves, paying with gold coins from the dragon's hoard which Fred had stashed in his pack.
2. Between the forest and the cave of the Witch of the White House lay a desolate area where no-one lived, and so they were unable to get any new equipment or supplies.
