Fred, Astra and Velus could not make out the words, but that did not matter for they soon saw that the caravan had changed direction and was heading directly for them. It consisted of perhaps a dozen covered wagons drawn by teams of mules.

The lead wagon pulled up before them, and its dark-skinned driver spoke to them:

  1. "It was lucky that we spotted you. This is no place to be travelling on foot. Climb aboard. There's plenty of food and water in the back. Just help yourselves."
  2. "You're out of luck, my friends. We're slavers, and you three should fetch a good price."
  3. But he spoke in an unfamiliar tongue and they could not understand him.
