The Portal

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 41101

"Why should Vincent need us when he can turn anyone he chooses into a Carnage Beast?" Astra asked. "I thought he'd come here primarily to destroy you?"

"No time to explain," Sedge said. "Just go! I've set the portal to randomly change its destination every three seconds, so he won't be able to follow you through."

So Fred and Astra ran back down the hall, and entered what must be Sedge's own private chamber. Against one wall of the room stood a metal structure in the shape of a door frame, though it held no door. Miniature lightnings of various colours played about the outside of the frame, and there was a low humming sound. Through the frame, they could see not the part of the wall that must lie behind it but an unfamiliar outdoor landscape. In the foreground was a grassy plain, behind that a forest, and behind the forest a range of snowcapped mountain peaks. Even as they watched, that vista abruptly and completely changed, and it continued to change every few seconds. Some of the places that they saw looked very strange. There was one where the grass was blue and the sky had a distinctly orange hue, for instance.

"When Sedge talked about our hiding ourselves in a far dimension he wasn't kidding," Fred said.

Before Astra could reply, they heard a loud explosion from the far end of the hall. "I think Sedge's shield may have just collapsed," she said. "Come on, there's no time to lose."

  1. They stepped through the portal into an alien land.
  2. Astra stepped through first, for the portal was only wide enough for one person at a time. Unfortunately, between Astra and Fred passing through, the destination changed and they were separated.
