All the sails had acquired several holes and tears that would need to be patched if the Nyriad was to make any more than a few knots. "We have some silk sheets amongst our cargo," Haljon told the three girls. "I'd hoped to sell them at a good price, but we are going to have to use them to repair the sails. My men will be too busy sailing the ship for me willingly to spare them for that, so how are you ladies with a needle and thread? I say thread, but of course it will be more like twine than what you may be used to and the needles will be big in proportion. We'll take one sail down at a time for you to repair, if you are willing to help. I'm afraid you may get a few callouses from the work."

  1. "Naturally we'll be only too glad to do what we can." Thelma said.
  2. "We're willing, but I'm not sure that we will be very able," Louise replied.
  3. "Couldn't we work as sailors, so freeing up some of your men to repair the sails?" Sigourney, who didn't fancy sewing, asked hopefully. Haljon guffawed in response.
