"Should we leave and go back to the land?" Louise asked. "It seems pretty
dangerous out here." "It's pretty dangerous back there, too," Sigourney replied. "I don't wish to face the wrath of whoever's on those ships when they land and start looting and pillaging." "At the very least, we're a moving target on board this ship." Sigourney added. "Very well," Louise nodded. "We'll stay here and stake our lives on Haljon and the Nyriad." It took Haljon and his men little time to prepare to cast off, as the impetus of imminent danger seems to concentrate the mind wonderfully. Mere moments after the three women ducked below, the few flames aboard had been extinguished, the lines (the ones which had not been burned off) had been cut and the Nyriad was underway. The Hespanish ships blockading the harbor were much larger than Haljon's cargo cutter - but Haljon hadn't sailed this harbor for all these years without learning a trick or two. By hugging the deserted southern shoreline of the harbor, the Nyriad was able to escape notice by all but one of the warships. The single warship that spotted her was able to fire a single shot before the Nyriad sailed by. The fixed catapults couldn't be turned quickly or effectively, so the warship continued to bombard the harbor. However, the ship did not escape unscathed:
