"That was not as helpful as I had hoped," Spock said. "But for your
information, Doctor, what the Lieutenant told us is quite correct." "What are you saying, Spock?" McCoy asked incredulously. "Lieutenant Uhura is, in fact, a man named Lord Frederic D'Honare, trapped here by a powerful but unknown force." Sulu and Chekov looked at each other in disbelief. "But - blast it, Spock!" McCoy exclaimed, "We know Uhura! I know her! I've known her for the last four years!" "Yes, and she still is," Spock said calmly. "However, she is also Lord D'Honare." "Meester Spock," Chekov said hesitantly, "I don't understand. How can she be both Lieutenant Uhura and this Fred person?" "It is - a dichotomy, to be sure," he admitted. "I have no theory to explain it, but..." "Sir," Sulu interrupted, "What about the other issue - the force controlling the crewwomen?" The Vulcan shook his head. "I was not able to discern much," he admitted. "Whether this is a function of the Lieutenant's duality, or something else entirely, I cannot say with any certainty. What I did find out was that the fetuses can communicate with each other on a very basic level, over a limited distance. Also, I believe the same duality of identity that prevented me from accurately assessing the situation is what has protected her from having her personality dominated." There was a brief silence, which Fred finally broke. "So, what's our next course of action, Mr. Spock?" she asked softly.
