Astra decided that without knowing what they were, the contents of one
vial were likely to be as safe, or as dangerous, as any other. Since the
blue vial was closest to her, she turned her attention to it. The top was
sealed tight, but after a few minutes, she managed to wriggle it loose
with a POP. With a little more rocking, it tipped over on its
side, releasing a sparkling blue liquid. Quickly, Astra began drinking
her fill from the vial, hoping that the miniscule amount she was ingesting
would be enough to have an effect. Within seconds, she began to feel light headed. Please let this be it! she thought to herself. However, it became readily apparent that the effect was not what she'd had in mind. Feeling her arm tingle, Astra held it up to inspect it - and gasped as she saw her skin turning a light, powdery blue. Now what? she thought, rather forlornly. Turning, she decided to use the clear vial bottle as a kind of mirror. What she saw there gave her her biggest shock yet. From head to toe, Astra was now blue. Her hair was the dark blue of a deep ocean. The whites and pupils of her eyes had seeemingly merged, turning the clear blue of an open sky. And sprouting from her back were a pair of bluish, translucent gossamer wings. "I - I'm a blue faerie!" she exclaimed, her voice now at least a couple of octaves higher than before. "And I - I have wings!" Almost without thinking, the wings on her back began to beat, and she rose up into the air, high above the drawer and the floor of the cavern. "How marvelous!" she squealed, reveling in the sensation of flight. For long moments, she flitted about the cavern, lost in a giddy ecstasy she would have disdained a short time ago. This is so wonderful! she giggled to herself. Oh, I can see so many things I couldn't before. I can sense so much life and energy here! There's Fred - it was his footsteps I heard pass by, in the library next door! And Velus - so daring, even as a cute little doggie! And the Dragon! Did I really plan to hurt that magnificent creature before? I could never harm another living being - they're all so precious and - and... Abruptly, Astra stopped, still hovering in midair. By the great Mother, what am I thinking? She realized that her transformation into a faerie had not just been physical, but mental as well. And the blue faeries were reknowned for being one of the most magically powerful - and one of the most pacifistic - of the faeriefolk. I'll never be able to defeat the dragon like this! I already feel like he's my friend - even if he is a monster! Do I dare try another potion? Do I even want to? Oh, what should I do?
