"Indeed, Lieutenant," Spock replied calmly as he began untying her, before moving on to free McCoy and the two male orderlies who it turned out had also been restrained in Sickbay. "Perhaps the force that had all but overpowered me allowed itself to be distracted by the need to ensure that it kept all the women under its control whilst they took over the ship. At any rate, I was able to fight it off, and now that I am alert to it it will not be able to threaten me again."

"So what do we do now?" McCoy asked.

"First we ensure that Nurse Chapel is securely tied up and then we recapture the ship, Doctor."

"Well, of course, Spock," McCoy responded in an exasperated tone. "But how?"

"We will have the great advantage of surprise, since they think that they are in complete control."

"Won't what you call 'the force' be aware that Chapel has been knocked out?" Fred asked.

"From what I have been able to learn about it, I do not believe so. A group mind with 125 components is unlikely to notice that one of those components has gone missing."

"But Chapel's embryo won't be unconscious," McCoy objected. "Won't it tell the others that its host is no longer functioning?"

"No. I believe that it needs its host to be conscious for it to be able to communicate with the other embryos. It broadcasts via her mind, rather than directly."

"But humans aren't telepaths."

"Not normally, no, but the potential is there, and they have managed to make use of it, without their hosts being aware of it."
