Fred, in the meantime, had wandered off along a passage leading away from the council chamber. Eventually he emerged into a great cavern whose interior was lit by daylight; for there was a large hole in the centre of the roof through which a patch of sky could be seen.

Only ten yards away, but with her back to him so that she was unaware of his arrival, Gaoric's daughter was standing. To Fred's embarrassment, she was in the act of disrobing. Then she hung up her dress on a peg that had been hammered into the cavern wall. Fred noticed that there were many such pegs, some empty and some with clothes on them.

Then, in the blink of an eye, she changed into her dragon form.

  1. She soared up and away, and out through the hole in the roof.
  2. Fred called to her.
  3. At that moment, someone else entered the cavern and saw Fred.
