Unidentified Ex-Flying Object

Where they had made camp was at the entrance to the pass. Only a short distance back down the way that they had come, the rocky uphill slopes on either side of the trail gave way on one side to a thickly forested downwards slope. It was into that slope that the disk had crashed. So they retraced their steps a short distance down the trail, and then struck off into the forest.

Had it not been for the glow that the thing still gave off they would never have been able to find their way in the darkness. Since the trees were conifers, there was little undergrowth, which made things a little easier. Fortunately, too, the disk had approached from the opposite direction, so they did not have any fallen trees to contend with.

They were naturally speculating about what the disk could be. All that they could think of was that it must be the result of some incredibly powerful magic, though they could not guess what its purpose might be. Something must have gone wrong, though, as the mage responsible could surely not have intended his creation to crash in this remote spot - and there was no doubt in their minds that what they had seen was a crash rather than a controlled descent.

1. Then they arrived at the disk, which was surrounded by charred and splintered trees.
