The dark-haired woman was looking at her uncomprehendingly, but the lighter-haired
woman seemed to understand her. She explained that her name was Angela and that she
was a Protector, a being created to protect people. This was more or less meaningless to
Astra. She had heard of artificial life created by the likes of dark sorcerord Zerm the Elder
and the legendary mad scientist-mage Vincent, but neither name seemed to ring a bell with
her. Using Angela as an interpreter, she conversed with Charmina. Charmina was reluctant
to tell about herself, but did tell her that she worked as a barmaid in Varga, one of the
infamous "shadow cities" whose existance was known only to merchants and thieves.
Charmina was somewhat surprised that she couldn't understand Astra's language. She had
a good practical grasp of Aquilarian, as she had made a point of knowing every language
that was spoken in Varga. It was at this point that Astra realized that she was no longer
speaking Aqualarian as a result of the dark mage's spell. Angela attempted to remove the
geis, but failed. It was possible that her magic only worked in life-or-death situations.
Charmina also pointed out that it would be useful to have two people who spoke the local
language rather than just one.
Astra then explained how she had been transported here. While traveling through the Southern Caves on a quest to kill the Dragon who dwelled there, she encountered mysterious black voids, one of which sucked her in. Charmina explained that she had been transported here as a side effect of some kind of magic attack. Angela explained that both she and Charmina had actually been taken here by a Dimensional Shambler, but could not put into words what it was. She also told them that they were in a parallel universe, but couldn't adequately explain that either. They could see a faded wooden sign nearby. Astra, who now could read the language, saw that it said
