Amy and the Knights

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 36995

In the year with which she'd lived with Nigel, Amy had fallen into a sort of routine which after a year felt no less normal than that of med school. In fact, when she looked back on her old life, she realized that in some ways she preferred this one. The pressure was significantly less and she had a close friend she could trust, whereas in med school she'd become so wrapped up in her work that her social life had suffered. But she missed being able to exercise her mind. And sometimes she felt that she missed the companionship of other human beings--something she never told Nigel. Then again, she was sure that Nigel himself was just as lonely in his own way. He was the only intelligent member of his kind. He'd only recently become that way. When they'd first met, Nigel was completely feral, but when he'd come to her aid, he'd had his intelligence increased and knowledge of English and even a name downloaded into his mind. Was it one of the experiments of the dragon or something else entirely? Still, on the whole he enjoyed his new existance as much as she did.

But one day the routine of their life was cruelly interrupted when they went out to hunt in the forest near the Shreken. There was an entrance to the caves here that neither the dragon nor his minions usually used, leading out to a forest full of game. A good rabbit could usually be had, perhaps even a deer when they were lucky. Perhaps the question of Nigel's origin and Amy's loneliness was weighing more on their respective minds than usual that day, however, because they became lost after some time. Amy had grown very skilled at orienting herself, but as it grew later, they realized that that day they had no idea where in the dark wood they were and how to find their way back home.

After a while, they realized they were not alone. Flashes of light off of armor could be seen in the woods around them. "What is that?" said Amy.

"It's some of the other humans in this world," said Nigel. "Probably the ones that come after the dragon every now and then. They wear shiny hard clothes and weild those pointy things... What were they called? Swords? Yes. Be careful--they can't be trusted. Every one I've met has tried to kill me."

Amy could believe Nigel--after all, it would be hard to imagine most people even in her world reacting well to Nigel, let alone this benighted one--but she realized that her heart ached so much for her to speak to another human being that she was tempted to reveal herself. But she kept quiet, as painful as it was. She listened to the words of the knights-- her hearing had grown sharper out of necessity in the last year.

"Oath!" said a gruff older male voice. "I could have sworn that peasant had said that the entrance to the caves was near here. No wonder the dragon doesn't use this entrance--you can barely see your hand in front of your face in this forest even in the daytime."

"I saw something," said a brash younger male voice.

"What did it look like?" said a husky female voice. "Do you think it was a minion of the dragon?" Amy tensed and tried not to breathe too hard. She could feel the muscles in Nigel's leg tense also.

"A crazy Amazon riding some kind of legged snake," said the second voice.

"Maybe it was that person the King sent to kill the dragon a year ago?" said a fourth voice. It was very clear and strong and sexy and compassionate. It reminded Amy of that TA in the class in her first year whose name she couldn't even remember anymore who she couldn't stop thinking about. Her heart by now was beating so loud she was sure the knights could hear it. "The strange beautiful wizard-girl from afar who the King sent when he grew desparate?"

"I had heard she was dead," said the female voice. "Perhaps she found some way to survive and even tamed one of the dragon's creatures."

"Or perhaps she sold out to the dragon," said the second. "That would be why she was riding a serpent."

  1. Amy tries cautiously to make contact with the knights.
  2. Amy tries to return to the caves without being noticed.
