Our four heroes' eyes lit up at Plucky's offer. It was a long time since
any of them had had a really good meal. Even back on the island, though
food had been plentiful it had been lacking in variety. "Yes, please,"
they said almost with one voice.
Soon they were all tucking into bacon and eggs, and drinking from mugs of an unfamiliar but very pleasant drink. Plucky told them that this "brew", as he called it, was made from an infusion in boiling water of the leaves of a local herb known as tey. Since the four were busy eating and drinking, Plucky did most of the talking, though they rather suspected that this might have been the case anyway. The gnome seemed to be naturally loquacious. He described in great detail a number of ingenious ways in which they might reach the outside of the town walls. Some could only be used at night, as they would be too obvious if attempted during the day. Even if the fugitives should still manage to escape, if the townspeople realised that Plucky must have assisted them then it would land him in serious trouble. When they had finished eating, Plucky said:
